Sally’s Log Book

Sally’s Log Book

Lime is a beautifully simple material.

I hope you will drop in from time to time as I continue my journey with a magical material which turns itself from lime stone to quick lime to air lime and back to lime stone again with the help of nothing more than heat, air, water and the vagaries of time.

Why bother with it? Because it keeps our houses sound, dry and pleasant to live in for future generations and allows us to decorate them as simply or as whimsically as we please leaving nothing more harmful in its wake than a handful of dust.

Starting with a mixture of two and a half parts coarse sand to one part lime putty, we can create mortars for bedding in stone, protect our buildings from the onslaught of the elements, draw moisture out of saturated walls and produce ever finer and fatter mixes which have been coloured, carved, painted, moulded and polished over centuries of human pleasure and discovery.

All of these processes interweave and rely on one another and I would love to share past, current and I hope future projects with you, trusting that luck and carbon dioxide will remain on my side.

Thank you for sharing my log book. And perhaps I will see you soon.
